Studio vs. Outdoor Portraits: Which Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions I get when someone reaches out for portraits is: “Should I do studio or outdoor?” The short answer is there’s no wrong choice. The longer answer is that each option offers a very different experience and the right one for you depends on the kind of images you’re drawn to and how you want your portraits to feel.

Here’s a breakdown to help you decide which portrait style fits you best.

Studio Portraits

Studio portraits are all about control, intention, and focus. When we’re in the studio, everything from lighting, to background, to composition, is carefully crafted. There are no weather variables, distractions, or unpredictable lighting shifts. It’s just you, the camera, and the vision we’re building together.

If you’re drawn to clean, minimal, or editorial-style portraits, studio sessions might be your lane. They’re great for professional headshots, branding portraits, and anyone who wants their images to feel timeless and polished. Studio portraits also put the emphasis squarely on expression and form, which can be incredibly powerful.

Another benefit of studio portraits is consistency. Studio lighting allows for a cohesive look across images, which is ideal if you’re using your portraits for business, press, or creative branding.

Outdoor Portraits

Outdoor portraits are about atmosphere and movement. Shooting outside brings natural light, texture, and environment into the frame, which adds a sense of story to the images. Whether it’s downtown Athens, the Botanical Gardens, or a quiet corner of UGA’s campus, the location becomes part of the narrative.

Outdoor sessions tend to feel more relaxed and candid. People often move more naturally, interact with their surroundings, and forget about the camera a little quicker. If you’re someone who wants your portraits to feel organic, expressive, and less posed, outdoor photography might be the better fit.

The trade-off is that outdoor shoots come with variables: weather, light, and timing matter. Although when everything aligns, the results can feel incredibly authentic and alive.

Still Not Sure?

Here’s the thing, you don’t have to lock yourself into one forever. Some clients start with studio portraits for a clean foundation and later add outdoor sessions for variety. Others choose based on season, mood, or purpose.

If you want portraits that feel refined and controlled: studio is likely your move. If you want images that feel personal, dynamic, and rooted in a place or moment: outdoor portraits might be calling your name.

At the end of the day, my job is to help guide you toward what works best for you. Whether we’re shooting in-studio or outside around Athens, the goal is always the same: honest, intentional images that feel like you. Let’s talk about your next portrait session.
